Double Life of Alfred Bloggs
These days people who do manual work often receive more money than clerks who who work in offices. People who work in offices are frequently referred to as “white collar workers” for the simple reason that they usually wear a collar and tieto go to work. Such is human nature, that a great many people are often willing to sacrifice higher pay for the privilege of becoming white-collar workers. This can give rise to curious situations, as it did in the case of Alfred Bloggs who worked as a dustman for the Else more Corporation.
When he got married, Alf was too embarrassed to say anything to his wife about his job. He simply told her that he worked for a corporation. Every morning, he left home in a fine black suit. He then changed into overalls and spent the next eight hours as a dustman. Before returning home at night, he took a shower and changed back into his suit. Alf did this for over two years, and his fellow dustman kept his secret. Alf”s wife has never discovered that she married a dustman and she never will. he will soon be working in an office as a junior clerk. He will be earning only half as much as he used to, but he feels that his rise in status is is well worth the loss of money. From now on he will wear a suit all day, and others will call him “Mr Bloggs. m not Alf.”
Why didn’t Alfred want his wife to find out the truth about his work?
He thought that it was too embarrassing for her to know that he is working as a dustman.

What is more important for Alfred: money or social status?
Alfred more cared about his social status, because he cared about what others thought about him, instead of how much money he made, cause while working as a junior clerk, he was getting payed half of the money.
Would you act like Alfred if you couldnt’ find a proper job?
In my case, I would act like Alfred even though it feels like the wrong move, but I have an explanation for my opinion. Hear me out. I care about what other people think about me and I wouldn’t want anyone to know I work as a duster. I would take the job of the junior clerk, because that way I can slowly grow in working in a bigger business where I would earn more money. I think that starting slow, working hard and moving forward step by step is the best choice.
