I.Do you know the word brainstorm? It is translated into Armenian as “մտագրոհ”: This word is often used by educators, lecturers at the beginning of their work-shops or seminars. They want to find out how much you know about the topic they are going to deliver. For example, if you are asked to brainstorm the word “education” you are to say words associated with education: public school, teaching, college, university, future career, foreign languages …

Brainstorm the words: computer, sports, universe,

computer- technology, typing, learning, education, entertainment.

sports- fitness, exercise, entertainment, career, strength, athleticism.

universe- galaxy, planets, infinity, milky way, sun, moons.

II.Someone, whom you do not know, suddenly says something and waits for your reaction.

a) What nasty weather we are having today!

It truly is a very gloomy day.

b) Time is passing so quickly nowadays!

I agree! So much has happened, but it feels like it was yesterday.

c) Thanks Heaven! At last I met somebody on this deserted island.

Same, I have been looking for at least another person for so long.

d) We are like the ones in that song: “Strangers in the night”.

I know right, that song is truly about us.

e) I am thirsty. Please give me a cup of water, as I am so hungry that I don’t know where to stay for the night.

No worries, you can stay at my house today. I’ll bring you food and water right away!

III. What is your opinion about these controversial sayings?

When poverty comes in through the door, love flies out of the window.

I think this conversational saying means, that when poverty happens all you can think of is getting a good job to earn money so you can take care of yourself and you wound have time to even think about love.

You can’t always be motivated, so you should learn to be disciplined.

This saying is very much straight forward, because it means you can’t always get what you want to make yourself happy, sometimes you should understand that you should be a little humble and not get what you want.

It’s hard to win an argument with a smart man, but is nearly impossible to win an argument with a stupid person.

This means that smart people know what they are talking about and know their reasons to argue with someone, because they are smart. When it comes to less intelligent people, it is nearly impossible to win an argument with them, because they think that what they are saying is correct, but it is not and they’ll try to convince you that they’re not stupid and know better than you.

Be kind to unkind people. They need it most.

Most of the people who are not kind have been through the most pain, so being nice to them when they’re not nice to you is the best way to change the way they think about people. After all, like the singer Selena Gomez would like to say “Kill them with kindness”.

Confidence is silent, insecurity is loud.

In order to understand this saying I imagine a classroom with a teacher and students. Confident people raise their hands, participate and want to answer any question, even if they have the wrong answer. Insecure and shy people stay quiet. Teachers usually notice when someone is not participating more than the students who are, so they try to make them speak up.
